Napa Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon
Sourced from Stagecoach Vineyard in the Atlas Peak appellation, this 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon represents one of Alpha Omega’s limited-production, vineyard-designated expressions. Alpha Omega describes its selected Stagecoach blocks as sitting around 1,000 feet in rocky mountain terrain, producing Cabernet with concentrated flavor and substantial structure.
The wine currently shows considerable power, with pronounced dark fruit, elevated oak character, and firm tannins. Although it can be served now with decanting, the Cork & Journey panel found it too young and likely to improve after additional bottle aging.
Alpha Omega is a family-owned Napa Valley winery based in Rutherford. Robin and Michelle Baggett came to Napa Valley in 2005 and developed the winery around a combination of estate vineyards and fruit sourced from established sites across the region. The winery is certified Napa Green and is particularly focused on Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style red wines.
Stagecoach sits within Alpha Omega’s single-vineyard Cabernet program, which is intended to show the differences among Napa Valley’s mountain, benchland, and valley-floor vineyard sources.
The 2022 vintage was produced during a transitional period for Alpha Omega’s winemaking team. Henrik Poulsen had returned as head winemaker in 2019, and Andy Erickson joined as consulting winemaker in 2021. Melissa Paris joined the cellar team as assistant winemaker in September 2020, became associate winemaker in early 2023, and was promoted to head winemaker in July 2024. Alpha Omega has subsequently credited Paris with helping shape its 2022 lineup.
The winery currently lists Paris as winemaker and Erickson as consulting winemaker. Erickson’s Napa Valley experience includes work with producers such as Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, Mayacamas, and Dalla Valle.
Stagecoach Vineyard occupies rugged terrain in the Vaca Mountains above Napa Valley. The broader property contains more than 600 planted acres divided among 204 individual blocks, with elevations generally ranging from approximately 1,100 to 1,750 feet. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for more than half of its plantings.
Alpha Omega identifies its 2022 bottling as coming from select blocks within the Atlas Peak portion of Stagecoach. This section contains red volcanic soils and extensive flat rock, creating strong drainage across the hillside. Stagecoach describes the Atlas Peak sector as one of the property’s warmer areas, with less marine influence, slower ripening than its Pritchard Hill section, and fruit that can show blue-fruit character and somewhat softer tannins.
In this bottle, the site expresses itself through concentrated black fruit, graphite, mineral notes, and a firm tannic framework.
The wine is identified as Cabernet Sauvignon, but detailed blend percentages were not provided with the tasting record.
Alpha Omega’s public technical-sheet archive currently lists a 2023 Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon but does not provide a technical sheet under the 2022 section. As a result, the fermentation method, oak type, percentage of new oak, aging duration, alcohol level, and case production for this specific vintage could not be verified.
The vanilla, cedar, toasted oak, cocoa, and mocha characteristics found during tasting indicate a noticeable oak presence, but the precise cellar program should not be inferred from sensory impressions alone.
Napa Valley’s 2022 growing season is frequently described as a vintage of two distinct harvest periods. White varieties and some early red grapes were harvested quickly, while later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon faced an extended heat event around Labor Day. Growers responded by accelerating some picking decisions while leaving less-developed Cabernet blocks on the vine.
The heat contributed to variation among vineyard sites and picking dates, particularly for Cabernet Sauvignon. Without a harvest date for Alpha Omega’s Stagecoach blocks, the precise effect on this wine cannot be confirmed. Its concentrated fruit, elevated structure, and youthful firmness are consistent with the more powerful side of the vintage, but that remains a tasting-based observation rather than a documented production detail.
Clear and deep ruby in color, with the concentration expected from a young, mountain-grown Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
The nose is pronounced and youthful. Cassis, blackberry, and dark cherry form the core, supported by cedar, graphite, vanilla, toasted oak, and cocoa. The oak influence is currently prominent but remains connected to the wine’s dense fruit profile.
Dry and full-bodied, with medium-plus acidity, high tannin, elevated alcohol warmth, and pronounced flavor intensity. Blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark plum are followed by mocha, licorice, tobacco, mineral notes, and baking spice.
The fruit is concentrated, but the wine remains compact and tightly structured. Firm, ripe tannins carry considerable weight across the palate, reinforcing the assessment that the bottle is still early in its development.
The finish is long and savory, with lingering dark fruit, tobacco, mineral, spice, and toasted oak. Tannin remains noticeable after the fruit begins to taper, suggesting that additional bottle age should improve integration.
The 2022 Alpha Omega Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerful, full-bodied expression of Atlas Peak, combining concentrated cassis and blackberry with graphite, cedar, cocoa, and pronounced oak. Its long finish and substantial tannin support the 94-point assessment, but the wine is not yet fully integrated.
It can be opened now with a substantial decant, particularly for drinkers comfortable with youthful tannin and assertive structure. Waiting several years should allow the oak, fruit, and tannins to settle into a more cohesive profile.
