Old Town Cellars brings an urban winery model to Park City’s Historic Main Street, sourcing wines from established growing regions and blending and bottling them locally. The cellar-style lounge combines house bottlings, a broad by-the-glass list, private tastings, and a relaxed indoor setting rooted more in mountain-town culture than vineyard tourism.

Old Town Cellars is a private-label winery, wine bar, and bottle shop located at 408 Main Street in Park City, Utah. Unlike a traditional estate winery surrounded by vineyards, it sources wine and fruit from established growing regions before completing blending and bottling in Park City.

The result is an urban winery centered on approachable wines, indoor hospitality, and the city’s après-ski culture. This is not a vineyard tour or agricultural estate experience. Instead, guests visit a historic Main Street lounge where they can taste Old Town Cellars bottlings alongside a broader selection of wines, local beer, spirits, and small food pairings.

During our visit, we found the house wines consistently well made, while the by-the-glass list was one of the strongest aspects of the experience. The broader selection gives visitors an opportunity to move between the winery’s own bottlings and wines from other producers without committing to a full bottle.

History & Founding

Old Town Cellars was founded around 2015 and 2016 by Park City natives Stephen MacKay and Jason Morgan. Childhood friends, the two developed the business around their shared interests in skiing, wine, and the Park City community.

MacKay had previously worked at Chez Betty, a longtime Park City restaurant, and later pursued wine studies in New Zealand. He returned to Utah with the idea of creating a local wine brand that could source from established growing regions while completing blending, bottling, and hospitality in Park City.

The winery became Park City’s first on-site wine production facility. After operating from an earlier location on lower Main Street, the business moved to its current address at 408 Main Street. The larger location allowed it to expand its bar, private tasting, retail, event, and production activities.

Winemaker

Charlie Kidd serves as head winemaker at Old Town Cellars and brings approximately 25 years of winemaking experience to the position. His background includes work in several American wine regions, giving him experience with different grape varieties, climates, and production styles.

MacKay also remains involved in blending and production. Because Old Town Cellars is not tied to a single vineyard or appellation, the winemaking team can work with wines and fruit from multiple regions. This makes sourcing and blending decisions central to the house style.

Rather than attempting to express one estate site, the winery focuses on assembling wines that fit its intended flavor profile and price point. This approach allows individual bottlings, blends, vintages, and source regions to change as the team evaluates available material.

The Property

Old Town Cellars occupies a cellar-style space on Historic Main Street. The interior retains elements of the building’s mining-era character, including stone, brick, dark wood, subdued lighting, and enclosed rooms that feel separated from the activity outside.

The location has reportedly served several purposes during Park City’s history, including use connected to the town’s silver-mining economy. Some of the more colorful stories associated with the building, including claims of Prohibition-era activity, are part of local lore and are not as firmly documented.

The property does not offer vineyards, outdoor grounds, or scenic estate views. Its appeal comes from the historic indoor atmosphere and convenient Main Street location. It works particularly well as a wine stop before dinner, after skiing, or while exploring the shops, restaurants, and bars in central Park City.

Wine Style & Notable Bottlings

The Old Town Cellars portfolio includes white, rosé, red, and reserve wines sourced from several established American growing regions. Bottlings have included Mountain Town White, Elusive Chardonnay, Townie Rosé, Perpetual Reserve, Mountain Town Red, and Outlaw Reserve.

Because the winery uses a flexible sourcing model, visitors should confirm the current vintage, grape composition, and regional source when ordering. The exact details of a bottling may change between releases.

Mountain Town Red represents the more approachable side of the portfolio. It has been produced as a red blend with plum, violet, berry, and spice characteristics, supported by fresh acidity and moderate tannins. The emphasis is on immediate drinkability and food compatibility rather than heavy extraction or extended aging.

Outlaw Reserve offers a more structured expression, commonly centered on Cabernet Sauvignon. Recent tasting information describes red and black fruit, cedar, and a firmer tannic profile. Perpetual Reserve has combined Pinot Noir and Syrah, bringing together bright red fruit, earthy notes, and a lighter body.

The wines are generally direct and accessible. They are designed to work within the casual lounge setting without requiring extensive explanation or decanting.

Tasting Experience

Old Town Cellars operates as both a casual wine bar and a private tasting venue. Guests may stop in for wine by the glass, bottles, beer, spirits, and small food pairings, or reserve a more structured experience focused on the house portfolio.

Private tastings generally include five two-ounce pours, commonly arranged as two whites, one rosé, and two reds. An additional library pour may also be available. The experience provides a more organized introduction to the wines than a casual bar visit and allows additional discussion of sourcing, blending, and production.

The winery also offers specialty events and group activities. These have included candle-making and wine-tasting workshops, private parties, and mixology classes. Some specialty experiences have been priced at approximately $120 per guest, although visitors should verify current pricing and availability before booking.

The hospitality style is relaxed and social rather than heavily technical. Visitors looking for detailed production information will likely get more from a private tasting, while the main lounge is better suited to exploring several wines at an informal pace.

During our visit, the broad by-the-glass program added considerable value. It allowed us to compare the house wines with selections from other regions and producers, making the experience more varied than a tasting room limited entirely to its own labels.

Wine Club

Old Town Cellars does not appear to operate a conventional wine club with defined shipment schedules, membership tiers, allocation benefits, or recurring release commitments.

The business instead focuses on direct bottle sales, private tastings, events, and regular lounge service. Visitors interested in future releases should ask about the winery’s mailing list, special events, seasonal offerings, and other purchasing opportunities available at the time of their visit.

Regional Context

Old Town Cellars is best understood as a Park City urban winery rather than a producer representing a specific Utah vineyard or appellation. Its wines depend on vineyards and source material from regions outside the state, while the blending, bottling, branding, and hospitality take place in Utah.

This model connects the winery to Park City without suggesting that the grapes are locally grown. Its regional significance comes from its role within the city’s restaurant, bar, retail, and après-ski culture.

The location also provides a wine-focused option in a town better known for skiing, outdoor recreation, dining, and the Sundance Film Festival. For visitors who want to incorporate wine into a Park City itinerary, Old Town Cellars offers a convenient experience without requiring a drive to an agricultural wine region.

Visitor Information

Old Town Cellars is located at 408 Main Street in Park City, Utah. The lounge offers indoor seating and does not have vineyard or mountain views from an estate property.

Walk-in visits may be available for regular bar and lounge service. Reservations are recommended for private tastings, workshops, and specialty group experiences. Hours may change by season, particularly between the summer and ski periods, so visitors should confirm the current schedule before arriving.

Retail bottles are available for purchase based on current inventory. The lounge also serves wines by the glass, wines from outside producers, local beer, spirits, and selected food pairings.

Closing Assessment

Old Town Cellars provides a clear alternative to the traditional estate-winery visit. Its primary strengths are the historic cellar setting, flexible sourcing and blending model, approachable house wines, and extensive by-the-glass selection.

It is best suited to visitors seeking a relaxed wine experience in central Park City rather than vineyard scenery, estate farming, or an extended technical tour. The combination of local production, casual hospitality, and a varied wine list makes it a useful stop within a broader Main Street itinerary.
