Comal Restaurant at Chileno Bay has a reputation that precedes it. This hotel and restaurant have racked up more awards than we can count. OpenTable called Comal one of the “50 Best Restaurants in Mexico”, Travel + Leisure named the Chileno Bay Resorts & Residences, the 12th Best Hotel in Mexico in 2020, and USA Today called Comal one of the “Best Restaurants in Cabo San Lucas”.
With so much hype behind one restaurant, after all, most reviews of Chileno Bay use words like “cool,” “sophisticated,” and “chic.” We had to make a stop here when we made the trip to Baja to visit some of our favorite Valle de Guadalupe wineries.
At every turn, Chileno Bay Resorts reminds you that it’s a luxury property. The resort and residences opened in 2017 and have been a favorite of discerning travelers ever since. This private beach club features the only swimmable beach in Cabo San Lucas, a world-class spa and wellness center, and, of course, an award-winning on-site restaurant, Comal.
If you google “the best restaurant with ocean views in Cabo San Lucas”, Auberge’s Comal Restaurant in Chileno Bay is guaranteed to pop up at the top of the list. This Baja restaurant has some of the best oceanfront dining in Cabo San Lucas, and, honestly, there’s not a bad seat in the house.
Guests have the option of dining indoors or outdoors, although, even when you dine indoors, the open air concept makes it feel like you’re in the warm beachy air. Follow a path from the main dining area, across the lawn, and down a short illuminated pier, and you will find Comal’s semi-private “special occasion” table that is right on the waterfront.
Mood lighting in the form of candlelit sconces, built-in wall light displays, and gentle overhead lighting create the perfect ambiance for dining. Live music begins right as the sun sets, creating an atmosphere that is so comfortable you may never want to leave.
Crafting the culinary experiences at Comal is Chef Juan Pablo Loza. The menu at Comal would best be described as Global Mexican Cuisine. Seasonal ingredients and sustainable sourcing is at the core of each dish, and sustainable seafood, in particular, is a passion of Chef Loza’s. He has even been recognized by the government of Mexico for his efforts in this space.
As you would expect from a restaurant on the Sea of Cortez, the raw bar options here are excellent. Fresh scallops are served with vibrant lime, refreshing cucumber, and cilantro juice. The daily ceviche is always from the sea each day. And the local Baja oysters are a special treat for oyster lovers.
The Sharable Hot Dishes are one area where the restaurant really shines. Keep an eye out for Crispy, Soft Shell Crab served with steamed buns, Short Ribs, Doraditas with Chihuahua cheese, and succulent Octopus Huarachope that is accompanied by peanut mole and masa.
Like a lot of ultra-high-end resorts in Mexico, and anywhere, really, in order to get to the restaurant at Chileno Bay Resort, you need to go through a guarded gate. While we did have a little trouble getting through the gate, once we drove up to the hotel, the staff was phenomenal, escorting us to the restaurant and walking us around the property prior to dinner.
We started off at the bar while we were waiting for our table, something we highly recommend you do before sitting down to dinner. The mixologist bartenders were entertaining, to say the least, and very talented.
As the beautiful sun set over the ocean live music began to play. From our seats, we had a front row to one of the best sunsets we’ve ever seen. The chef is amazing, the ambiance is spectacular, and you can’t beat the service. A full-rounded culinary experience.
To cap off our night, we enjoyed a decadent chocolate cake served with creamy chocolate ice cream. It doesn’t get better than sipping your glass of red wine in a candlelit restaurant with an ocean view while savoring a delicious dessert.
Comal exceeded our expectations: this is the epitome of five-star luxury in Cabo San Lucas. It was a great 5-star experience from the minute we walked in with the spectacular views and outstanding service. We cannot recommend this restaurant enough.
