Located in Walla Walla, Washington, Abeja is an estate winery and inn situated on a restored historic farmstead. Recognized for its structured Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot, the winery combines focused agricultural stewardship with small-lot cellar practices. Operating with approximately 70 percent estate fruit, Abeja has built a reputation centered on quality, consistency, and a tranquil visitor experience in the foothills of the Blue Mountains.
Ken and Ginger Harrison founded Abeja in 2001 after searching the Walla Walla Valley during the late 1990s for land well-suited to growing Cabernet Sauvignon. They established the winery on a century-old farmstead, restoring its historic barns and outbuildings. Winemaker John Abbott contributed early expertise, followed later by co-winemakers Daniel Wampfler and Amy Alvarez-Wampfler. In 2018, the Harrisons sold majority interest in the winery to Seattle businessman Arnie Prentice, while majority interest in the on-site inn went to John Oppenheimer of Columbia Hospitality. By its 25th anniversary in 2026, Abeja expanded its estate holdings to supply the majority of its production.
Husband-and-wife co-winemakers Daniel Wampfler and Amy Alvarez-Wampfler oversee winemaking. Daniel previously worked with Columbia Crest, where he contributed to a Cabernet Sauvignon that received top national recognition, while Amy brings extensive Washington winemaking experience. Together, they focus on balanced extraction, restrained oak application, and varietal integrity across the portfolio, managing both estate harvests and selected regional fruit sources.
Set against the backdrop of the Blue Mountains, the property retains the historic aesthetic of its origins as a working farm. Restored structures, including the historic Small Barn, anchor the estate alongside landscaped grounds, vineyards, and mature trees. The site incorporates the Inn at Abeja, offering lodging integrated with the vineyard environment, creating a quiet setting for tastings and walks across the grounds.
Abeja is known for producing balanced, age-worthy wines with clear varietal definition and structured tannin. The portfolio includes the Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, which offers dark blackberry notes, toasty mocha, and fine-grained tannins. The Columbia Valley Merlot delivers dark fruit profiles with a balanced, silky structure. The estate-grown Chardonnay showcases crisp acidity and restraint, while limited-production bottlings, such as the Skysill Cabernet Sauvignon, highlight specific estate parcels and extended cellar potential.
Tasting appointments require prior reservations and feature both indoor and outdoor seating options. The year-round Traditional Tasting takes place in the historic Small Barn, focusing on current releases from the Beekeeper and Columbia Valley series for $40 per person, with fees waived for members and inn guests. A seasonal Estate Experience expands on this format, combining a walking tour of the grounds with a seated tasting of limited estate and library wines paired with small bites prepared by the executive chef.
Rather than a traditional tiered wine club, the winery operates a membership program known as The Abeja List. Members commit to purchasing a minimum of 12 bottles annually. Standing Order members receive guaranteed allocations of new releases, while general List members have secondary access to remaining inventory à la carte. Due to limited production and high demand, membership openings are periodically restricted, requiring prospective members to join a waitlist.
Situated within the Walla Walla Valley AVA, Abeja benefits from the region’s warm days, cool nights, and well-draining soils. These conditions allow Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and white varieties to develop full phenolic maturity while retaining natural acidity. The winery’s position in the eastern foothills provides additional microclimate nuances, contributing to the distinct structure and longevity of its wines.
Reservations are required for all tasting experiences. The estate offers indoor and outdoor seating options with views of the surrounding vineyard and mountain landscape. The Traditional Tasting is priced at $40 per person, with complimentary access for members and overnight guests at the Inn at Abeja.
Abeja delivers a thoughtful combination of estate viticulture, meticulous winemaking, and high-standard hospitality. With a portfolio anchored by structured Cabernet Sauvignon and refined whites, the winery offers a focused reflection of the Walla Walla Valley for visitors seeking a disciplined, site-driven tasting experience.
