Winemaker

Phillip Staehle, the visionary behind Enkidu Wine, has been immersed in the world of wine since his youth. His passion was ignited early, curating his own wine collection at just 18 years old. Staehle brings a deep respect for the winemaking process, focusing on minimal intervention and allowing the vineyard to speak through the wine. His approach blends traditional techniques with modern insights, ensuring that each bottle reflects the nuances of Sonoma’s climate and soil. The result is a portfolio of wines that are both approachable and complex. Be sure to check out our interview with Phil on our YouTube channel.

The Sideways Connection

In the 2004 film “Sideways,” which we are, the Fess Parker Winery & Vineyard in Los Olivos, California, was featured under the fictional name “Frass Canyon.” A notable scene was filmed here, where the character Miles, portrayed by Paul Giamatti, learns that his novel won’t be published. In a moment of despair, he drinks from the spit bucket in the winery’s tasting room.

For fans of “Sideways,” the Fess Parker Winery remains a significant stop on the “Sideways Wine Trail,” allowing visitors to experience a piece of cinematic history while enjoying acclaimed wines.

The Wines

Their lineup features a compelling range of varietals, including elegant Chardonnay, robust Zinfandel, and structured Cabernet Sauvignon. Each wine reflects the distinctive characteristics of its appellation.

Among the standout offerings which we rated 95 points is the 2021 “Humbaba” Rhône Blend has gained particular acclaim. This expertly crafted combination of Syrah and Petite Sirah is a testament to Enkidu’s ability to produce wines of both character and exceptional value. Bursting with dark fruit notes, subtle spice, and velvety tannins, the Humbaba is a versatile wine that complements both casual and refined occasions. Cork and Journey spotlighted this vintage for its harmonious flavor profile and outstanding quality, a true reflection of Enkidu’s winemaking philosophy. Beyond blends, Enkidu’s single-varietal wines stand out for their authenticity and depth. The Grenache, with its bright acidity and layers of red fruit, offers a vivid drinking experience, while the Pinot Noir displays classic elegance with nuanced flavors of cherry and earth. For those who favor whites, their Chardonnay is a delightful expression of Sonoma’s cooler climates, delivering a balance of richness and minerality that appeals to a range of palates.
