Napa Valley
Riesling
This vibrant white offers a refreshing counterpoint to the heavy reds typical of Napa Valley. Grown in the cooler Oak Knoll District, the Trefethen Dry Riesling 2021 showcases the serious potential of the varietal in California. It delivers focused acidity, distinct minerality, and a layered fruit profile that promises longevity.
While Napa Valley is globally renowned for Cabernet Sauvignon, a quiet revolution has been happening in the cooler pockets of the valley floor. The Oak Knoll District, located at the southern end of the valley, receives cooling breezes from San Pablo Bay, preserving the acidity essential for white wines. The 2021 vintage was defined by drought conditions, resulting in lower yields and concentrated flavors. Trefethen has championed Riesling here for decades, treating it with a seriousness that rivals their red programs. This bottling is strictly dry, avoiding the residual sugar often associated with the grape to focus instead on texture and aromatic precision.
Trefethen Family Vineyards is one of Napa Valley’s enduring family estates. Founded in 1968 by Gene and Katie Trefethen and later established as a winery by John and Janet Trefethen, the estate is centered around a historic wooden winery building known as Eshcol, which dates back to the 19th century. The family owns all their vineyards, allowing them complete control over farming practices. Today, the third generation, represented by Hailey and Lorenzo Trefethen, continues the legacy with a strong focus on sustainability and estate-grown integrity. Their location in the Oak Knoll District provides a diverse range of soil types and microclimates, enabling them to grow varieties like Riesling and Merlot alongside Cabernet Sauvignon.
Bryan Kays serves as the winemaker for Trefethen, bringing a deep understanding of the estate’s specific terroir. Kays joined the winery in 2006 and worked his way up through the cellar, gaining intimate knowledge of the vineyard blocks over nearly two decades. His approach emphasizes minimal intervention to let the fruit speak clearly. For the Riesling program, Kays focuses on preserving freshness, employing cold fermentation techniques to protect the delicate floral and fruit aromatics that define the varietal’s character.
The wine pours a pale, bright straw color with subtle hints of green at the rim, indicating its youth and freshness.
The nose is immediately expressive and lifted. Aromas of white peach, green papaya, and fresh apricot take the lead, supported by fragrant notes of jasmine and orange blossom. There is a distinct underlying scent of wet stone and a faint suggestion of lime zest that adds lift to the ripe stone fruit core.
On the palate, this wine is definitely dry and driven by a structural spine of high acidity. Flavors of tart nectarine and green apple mix with a savory salinity. The texture is lean but not thin, showing a compact density that suggests it will evolve well in the bottle. The finish is clean and persistent; tapering with a mouthwatering mineral note that invites another sip.
The Trefethen Dry Riesling 2021 is a confident expression of the grape that stands apart from the sweeter commercial examples often found on the market. It offers a precise balance of fruit and structure, making it an excellent companion for the table rather than just an apéritif. Its high acidity and lack of sugar make it particularly suited for difficult pairings, such as spicy Thai curries, fresh oysters, or roasted vegetables with herbs. This is a white wine that delivers concentration without excess, proving that Napa Valley can produce high-acid whites with distinction.
