This charming winery, owned by Ron Yates, offers wine enthusiasts a unique tasting experience, showcasing wines that reflect both tradition and bold experimentation. Renowned not only for its high-quality wines but also for the serene beauty that surrounds it.
Established with a commitment to showcasing Texas-grown grapes, they have built a solid reputation as one of the region’s leading wineries. Under the ownership of Ron Yates, the vineyard continues to flourish, balancing traditional techniques with forward-thinking methods. Yates, who also owns the well-regarded Ron Yates Wines in Johnson City, brings an innovative yet respectful approach to the wine industry, capturing the unique qualities of Texas Hill Country in each bottle. Winemaker Todd Crowell crafted the pre-2022 vintages, establishing a signature style for the vineyard’s bold reds and nuanced whites. Since then, Joshua Fritsche has carried on the legacy, infusing each bottle with a distinctive taste that resonates with the local terroir.
Spicewood Vineyards creates an experience that is as rich and inviting as the wines it produces. Guests are treated to indoor and outdoor seating, allowing them to enjoy views of the vineyards or relax in the charming tasting room. No reservations are required, making it accessible for spontaneous visits. The tasting room, described as “lovely” and “well done,” features warm wood accents and an inviting layout, perfect for enjoying a leisurely tasting experience.
For those looking to enhance their tasting, a cheese plate is available for $25, accompanied by complimentary bottled water, corn nuts, and gluten-free Crunchmaster crackers. This attention to detail extends to the staff, who are known for their warmth and expertise—our server, Cameron, exemplified this with his friendly and knowledgeable service.
Spicewood Vineyards offers a robust selection of wines, with each bottle telling a story of Texas’s diverse and evolving terroir. During our tasting, the reds especially stood out, exhibiting a depth and complexity not always associated with Texas wines. Here’s a closer look at some of their remarkable offerings:
2023 Sauvignon Blanc – $32
Profile: Crisp, vibrant, and distinctly reminiscent of French styles, we scored this Sauvignon Blanc 88 points. Aged in stainless steel for five months, it presents aromas of citrus and pineapple that meld seamlessly into flavors of Meyer lemon and salted cantaloupe.
2019 Blend 2 – $38
Profile: This red blend of Grenache, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Sauvignon which we gave 90 points. With notes of strawberries, white pepper, pomegranate, and salted truffle, it’s a wine that leaves a lasting impression.
2020 Tempranillo – $40
Profile: Texas-grown Tempranillo has garnered accolades for its rich character, and this 2020 vintage (90 points) is no exception. With aromas of hazelnut and vanilla cream, this wine unfurls flavors of cherry cola and figs, offering a robust yet balanced profile.
2020 The Good Guy – $49
Profile: Far and away the highlight of the tasting was The Good Guy. A blend of Tempranillo, Graciano, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot that has won over both critics and customers (we give it 93-points). Flavors of cocoa and strawberry rhubarb pie provide a comforting yet sophisticated palate.
They also offer a wine club for dedicated fans, providing members with exclusive access to limited-release wines, discounted prices, and invitations to member-only events. We give the club a five-star rating for its discounts, free tastings, and ability to choose your own wines. For regular visitors, membership is a fantastic way to explore more of the winery’s exceptional wines and participate in exclusive events.
