Shame on the Moon Restaurant, Ranco Mirage, CA

The classic yet contemporary décor emanates a soothing vibe, and the muted lighting creates an ambiance of quiet sophistication. The establishment is perfect for romantic dinners or quiet, intimate gatherings with friends or family, and the outdoor patio seating is perfect on balmy evenings, offering a comfortable and inviting atmosphere under the Californian stars.

What’s in a name?

Shame on the Moon has graced the culinary scene since 1984. Originally situated in Cathedral City, they made the move to Frank Sinatra Drive in Rancho Mirage after 11 years. The original owners, Milan and Tom, were big fans of Bob Seger and name the restaurant after this song of the same name. Which also is in the chorus of the song:

Oh, blame it on midnight

Ooh, shame on the moon

Milan ultimately assumed sole ownership, carrying forth for an astonishing 36 years. Ginger, a server turned hostess, also played an instrumental role in the restaurant’s triumph, contributing her talents for an impressive 25 years.

The Dining Experience

The menu at Shame on the Moon is a well-rounded blend of traditional and innovative dishes. Did we mention that it is a bit old school? They are famous for their Sauteed Calf’s Liver, a “customer favorite.”

We opted for the Filet Mignon with a Blue Cheese Glaze and Cabernet Sauce and the Grilled Mahi Mahi, and both were excellent.

Chocolate Cake

The Dessert Menu is also classic straight-forward steakhouse fare.  We had the chocolate cake, and it was as good as it looks in the picture below.  A true classic made by a local just for the restaurant.

Service at Shame on the Moon is also excellent.  Special shout out to our server Jeffery; he was outstanding. The entire staff is knowledgeable, professional, and noticeably attentive to diners’ needs. Their wine list is modest but is suited to cover most palates.

As to our wine, we brought in a bottle of one of our favorites, the 2013 Curly St. James, “Ostentatious Parlay,” and were pleased with the modest $25 corkage fee.

In Conclusion

A special mention must be made of the bar. The lounge area is inviting, and their cocktail menu is expansive, featuring both classics and house specials. The bartender, Michael’s craftsmanship is evident in each meticulously prepared drink.

The pricing is on the higher end, but the quality of food, stellar service, and the overall dining experience justify the cost.

So we highly recommend Shame on the Moon, as it is a dining gem in Rancho Mirage. It brings together all the elements of a wonderful dining experience: excellent food, a welcoming atmosphere, professional service, and an impressive drinks menu. Be sure to add it to your list of places to dine next time you visit the Palm Springs area.
