Wine News Round-Up

The Drinks Business – Angelina Mondavi Becomes Head Winemaker At Charles Krug

In The Drinks Business, it’s reported that Angelina Mondavi has become Head Winemaker at Charles Krug Winery, making her the first woman in her family to lead winemaking at their historic Napa estate. From the Article:

Angelina Mondavi will become the first woman in her family to lead the winemaking at Charles Krug since the Mondavis acquired the estate in 1943. The move follows the announcement that longstanding winemaker Stacy Clark, who has held the role for 14 years, is retiring. The Mondavi family thanked Clark for her “years of dedication and artistry” which they said have “left an indelible mark” on Charles Krug’s legacy.

The Drinks Business – AIV believes that Europe’s wine culture is at ‘existential risk’ from the WHO’s Prohibitionist stance

The Académie Internationale du Vin (AIV) has issued a public warning that Europe’s wine culture is facing existential risk due to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) increasingly prohibition-oriented stance. The AIV is alarmed by WHO proposals to “denormalize” wine consumption through stricter alcohol policy measures, arguing that such moves threaten not just economic stability in wine regions, but centuries-old cultural heritage.  From the Article:

Wineries and other groups also argue that the anti-alcohol movement is pushing for still wider measures to “denormalise” wine, such as warnings on back labels referring to life-threatening risks, significant excise tax increases, a complete moratorium on wine advertising, and, most extreme of all, the banning of wine from public spaces. That would mean no wine consumption on visible restaurant terraces, outdoor cafés, or venues open to the street – which the AIV sees as a step towards worldwide prohibition.

VinePair – Costco Recalls Exploding Prosecco Bottles in Over 10 States

In VinePair, Olivia White reports that Costco is recalling its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene (item #1878970) due to a safety hazard: unopened bottles may spontaneously shatter. From the Article:

Notice of the recall was initially sent out to members of the popular big-box store whose records indicated that the Prosecco was purchased in the four month time frame. The memo, now published to the Recalls & Product Notices section of Costco’s website, states, “there is a risk of unopened [Prosecco] bottles shattering, even when not handled or in use.”

Financial Post – Why Chianti Classico Wine Deserves More Respect | Financial Post

In Financial Post via Bloomberg, Elin McCoy argues that Chianti Classico—especially recent vintages like 2021—is undervalued and deserves wider respect among wine lovers. Key developments include the formalization of its 11 subzones (UGAs / Unità Geografiche Aggiuntive), which are now appearing on the 2020 and 2021 labels. The piece highlights how terroir differences among these subzones bring nuance to flavor, identity, and quality in Chianti Classico. From the article:

Manetti says they’re part of elevating the quality of Chianti Classico’s once-controversial top wine category, Gran Selezione. “The new rules require the use of only estate-grown grapes, and a higher percentage of our unique, elegant sangiovese grapes.” Naming the origins of wines encourages drinkers to sniff out a sense of place in them, he says. Some 80% of Gran Selezione UGA wines are from single vineyards.
