The Bergqvist family is an influential and well-respected family in the world of Portuguese wine, particularly in the Douro Valley. They have been associated with Quinta de La Rosa since 1906, when Claire Feuerheerd purchased the property.
The family’s involvement in winemaking began when Claire Feuerheerd, an English Port merchant, acquired Quinta de La Rosa. The estate remained in the Feuerheerd family until Claire’s daughter, Claire Anne, married Tim Bergqvist, a Swedish consul in Porto. The property was then passed on to the Bergqvist family, and they have managed it ever since.
Sophia Bergqvist, who took over the management of Quinta de La Rosa in 1988. Sophia has played a crucial role in modernizing the estate, implementing sustainable practices, and elevating the quality of their wines.
Under Sophia’s leadership, Quinta de La Rosa has continued to flourish and gain international recognition for its high-quality wines. She has been instrumental in modernizing the estate and improving winemaking techniques while still honoring the traditional methods that define the region.
Jorge Moreira is a highly regarded winemaker who has been the head winemaker at Quinta de La Rosa since 2002 and has played a crucial role in crafting their acclaimed wines. As you would expect, this wine has a beautiful amber color, showcasing its age and maturity.
On the nose, we picked up aromas of fig, plum, and almonds.
The mouthfeel is generous, lively, and balanced, showing notes of butterscotch, fig, almonds, caramel, dark chocolate, and cinnamon.
This port is an out-and-out winner for the price. Well-balanced with a long finish, it is worth the purchase. Pour yourself a glass and settle in with your favorite cigar, or if cigars aren’t your thing, try this with some Parmesan or Manchego cheese.
