Poggio Amorelli operates within the Chianti Classico DOCG zone, producing wines that reflect the region’s established viticultural traditions while incorporating selective blending to broaden complexity. Vineyard management focuses on low yields, optimal ripeness, and careful selection, supporting limited annual production. Visitors can book guided tastings that provide a structured overview of the estate’s portfolio. (Famiglia Mazzarrini)
The estate is part of the Mazzarrini family holdings, situated on hillside plots in Castellina in Chianti. The location benefits from well-drained soils and consistent sun exposure, producing grapes suited to the structured, age-worthy wines typical of Chianti Classico.
Marco Mazzarrini directs all vineyard and cellar operations. Trained in both traditional Tuscan winemaking and modern enology, he emphasizes varietal purity, balance, and site expression. Vineyard work includes canopy management to control sun exposure and yield regulation through selective thinning. In the cellar, fermentations are conducted in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve aromatics, with maceration periods adjusted to vintage conditions. Oak maturation is tailored to each wine: large-format Slavonian casks for Chianti Classico to maintain freshness, and a mix of French barriques and tonneaux for the Super Tuscan to enhance structure and depth. Mazzarrini’s approach consistently aims for integration of tannin and acidity while maintaining a restrained fruit profile.
Vineyards are planted primarily to Sangiovese, supplemented by Merlot and Colorino. The elevation and diurnal temperature variation encourage gradual ripening and preserve acidity. Annual production is between 6,000 and 10,000 bottles, allowing for close attention to each lot from harvest to bottling.
The wine club offers access to limited releases, preferential pricing, and direct shipments to several countries, with streamlined processes for US customers.
By-appointment tastings are held indoors or on an outdoor terrace with vineyard views. Flights move from Chianti Classico DOCG through the Super Tuscan IGT Oracolo, often paired with house-produced olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Poggio Amorelli delivers focused, small-lot wines that emphasize Sangiovese’s versatility. Under Marco Mazzarrini’s direction, the estate maintains a disciplined approach to both vineyard and cellar work, producing wines that reflect the strengths of the Chianti Classico terroir.
