History of the Winery

Founded in the 1980s by Giovanni Panizzi, the estate began with a clear ambition: to elevate Vernaccia di San Gimignano beyond its reputation as a light, everyday white. By focusing on single-vineyard expressions and a detail-oriented approach in both vineyard and cellar, Panizzi played a role in Vernaccia’s DOCG status, achieved in 1993. Ownership changed in 2005, but the founding philosophy of innovation rooted in terroir remains intact.

Winemaker

Alessandro Cellai, one of Tuscany’s more technically skilled winemakers, oversees production. Known for his previous work with Chianti Classico and Super Tuscans, Cellai brings a structured, often understated precision to Panizzi’s lineup. His tenure has introduced a more experimental edge to the portfolio while maintaining fidelity to the estate’s core identity.

The Property

The estate spans over 60 hectares across several sites around San Gimignano, with notable parcels in Santa Margherita and Larniano. The terrain varies from compact clay to limestone-rich soils, offering a range of microclimates. Elevations between 300 and 400 meters allow for significant diurnal shifts, preserving acidity and aromatic clarity in the wines. The winery itself sits in a restored farmhouse surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, with tasting areas both indoors and on a panoramic terrace overlooking the towers of San Gimignano.

The Wines

Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG – 90 PTS

A clean, focused expression showing lemon zest, almond skin, and a slight saline lift. Moderate weight, with crisp acidity and a tapering finish. This is a textbook example of modern Vernaccia—refreshing but with more structure than expected from the appellation’s baseline.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano Vigna Santa Margherita DOCG – 95 PTS

Sourced from a single vineyard at higher elevation, this is more concentrated and layered. Notes of citrus peel, white peach, dried herbs, and crushed stone come together in a compact frame. The finish is persistent, with a chalky texture and firm acidity. Still developing; expect greater complexity over the next 3–5 years.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva DOCG – 92 PTS

Extended lees aging gives this version added depth and phenolic grip. Yellow apple, chamomile, and light toast appear on the nose, followed by a palate that’s broader but still driven by freshness. Balanced and well-executed, it bridges the gap between easy-drinking whites and more cellar-worthy expressions.

Vertunno Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva – 91 PTS

Sangiovese-focused with red cherry, forest floor, and hints of dried thyme. Tannins are firm but polished, supported by moderate acidity. Oak is present but restrained. A regional Chianti that’s more structured than the norm, with room to evolve over the next few years.

San Gimignano Pinot Noir DOC – 92 PTS

A rarity in the region, this Pinot Noir avoids the pitfalls of overripeness. Red plum, cranberry, and light spice emerge over a fresh core. Tannins are fine-grained, and the finish is clean with subtle herbal undertones. Cooler vineyard placement and careful extraction help preserve varietal character.

Folgóre San Gimignano Rosso DOC – 96 PTS

A Bordeaux-style blend from a single site, this wine combines Sangiovese (60%), Merlot (20%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%). Cassis, black cherry, graphite, and cedar define the aromatic profile. The palate is concentrated but not excessive, with compact tannins and a long, dry finish. Structured for aging, this is a confident, age-worthy style that shows the winemaker’s attention to detail.

Tasting Options

Reservations are required, with tasting flights ranging from $25 to $60 depending on the number of wines and inclusion of older vintages. Guests are welcomed inside the restored farmhouse or outside with vineyard views. Visits typically include a short walking tour of the property, with emphasis on the Santa Margherita vineyard and its role in defining the estate’s white wine identity.

Conclusion

Panizzi stands out for its clear commitment to Vernaccia, but the broader portfolio reflects a willingness to push the boundaries of local tradition. The addition of Pinot Noir and a structured red blend alongside classic DOCG offerings illustrates the estate’s broader vision. With disciplined winemaking and a sharp eye on site expression, this is a winery that delivers concentration without excess and holds its place among the region’s more serious bottlings.
