Born into a family of hardworking Mexican immigrants, Miriam grew up steeped in the culture of Napa Valley’s vineyards, watching her father dedicate his life to winemaking. Inspired by his passion and her growing love for the industry, Miriam pursued higher education while working in the wine business. Her journey was bolstered by role models like Chuck Wagner of Caymus Vineyards and Jim Regusci of Regusci Winery, who encouraged her aspirations.
With her husband, Juan Puentes—a man whose story is one of resilience and grit—they transformed Honorio’s dream into reality. The name “Honrama” is a fusion of Honorio’s full name, reflecting the profound respect and gratitude Miriam holds for her father’s vision. Honrama Cellars began humbly, producing just 500 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, but over the years, it has grown into a respected winery, known for its exceptional wines and heartfelt story.
The story of Honrama’s winemaking is as much about community and family as it is about the wine itself. While Juan and Miriam lead the operation, their success is built on their hands-on involvement in every aspect of the business. Miriam, with her deep understanding of the industry, and Juan, with his business acumen and unshakeable work ethic, have combined their talents to create wines that embody the spirit of their heritage.
Their flagship wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon, is the culmination of meticulous attention to detail and a reverence for traditional winemaking practices. The couple’s approach highlights their commitment to showcasing the essence of Napa Valley’s terroir in every bottle. Though Honrama Cellars remains small in production compared to larger wineries, its size allows for an intimate focus on quality over quantity.
Honrama Cellars is located in the Heirs Collective in Sonoma, home to an exceptional lineup of boutique wineries that showcase the creativity and diversity of the region’s winemaking community. Currently, the collective features Heirs Of My Dream Winery, Honrama Cellars, and Enkidu Wine. Each winery brings its own unique perspective and craftsmanship to the table, offering visitors a chance to explore a wide range of varietals and styles.
Tastings are priced between $40 and $65, offering an accessible entry point to sample their wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. Reservations are required to ensure a curated and personal experience for each guest.
What makes the tastings at Honrama unique is the opportunity to interact with the owners. Both Miriam (our host when we dropped in) and Juan frequently join guests to share their story, the inspirations behind their wines, and the details of their winemaking process. It’s these personal touches that elevate the experience beyond the typical wine tasting.
Honrama Cellars is a shining example of how hard work, family bonds, and the determination to honor one’s heritage can yield extraordinary results. From its heartfelt beginnings to its current role as a respected producer of Napa Valley wines, Honrama is a tribute to generations of resilience and passion.
Though the winery may not boast sweeping vineyard views, it delivers something more meaningful—a connection to its founders’ story and a chance to taste wines crafted with care and intention. Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or new to exploring Sonoma’s offerings, Honrama Cellars is a must-visit destination for those seeking an authentic, soulful wine experience.
