The story of Emevé Wines begins with the passion of Don Mario Villarreal, whose lifelong connection to the land eventually led him to explore the world of viticulture. Though his career initially took him down different business paths, his interest in vineyards and wine grew stronger over time. This passion culminated in the founding of Emevé Wines, named after the Spanish pronunciation of his initials, MV.
In 2004, Don Mario planted his first vines, focusing on classic varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. By 2006, the winery produced its first vintage—though it wasn’t intended for commercial sale, instead shared among friends and family. The overwhelmingly positive response led to the official launch of Emevé’s wines in 2008.
Today, the estate spans 18 hectares and includes additional varietals like Tempranillo, Malbec, and Chardonnay. Emevé’s production process reflects a commitment to quality: The winery imports Hungarian, French, and American oak barrels, with new barrels introduced regularly to maintain high standards. What began as a personal venture has blossomed into a well-regarded name in Valle de Guadalupe’s growing wine scene.
Behind Emevé’s impressive portfolio is Daniel Lonnberg, one of Baja California’s most sought-after winemakers. Originally from Chile, Daniel brings a wealth of experience and a nuanced understanding of the region’s climate and soils. His expertise is not limited to Emevé; he consults for several top wineries in Valle de Guadalupe, including Adobe Guadalupe, Norte 32, Hilo Negro, and Hacienda Guadalupe.
Since joining Emevé in 2013, Daniel has significantly expanded the winery’s range. Early on, the portfolio focused heavily on red wines, with only a single low-alcohol Chardonnay representing the whites. Recognizing the region’s warm, Mediterranean-like climate, Daniel introduced the Isabella blend—a refreshing combination of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier. His approach to winemaking is centered on balance and elegance, allowing the characteristics of each varietal to shine without overwhelming the palate.
What sets Daniel apart is his hands-on style and thoughtful approach to each vintage. His wines are not just technically sound but also expressive, telling the story of both the land and the people who cultivate it. Meeting him in person, you quickly realize that his passion for winemaking is matched only by his desire to create wines that people genuinely enjoy drinking.

A highlight of our visit was revisiting the 2018 Los Nietos Reserva, the winery’s most emblematic red blend. This Bordeaux-style mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc impressed with its deep ruby color, layered aromas of red fruits, tobacco, and coffee, and a smooth, well-structured finish. The wine’s complexity and balance make it a standout for pairing with hearty dishes or savoring on its own.
