Sonoma Valley
Gewürztraminer
This latest Gewürztraminer shines as both a tribute to Gundlach Bundschu’s historic roots and a bold step forward. As the winery’s first ROC™-certified release, the wine honors their heritage while embracing regenerative farming—and echoes the dedication chronicled in our Gundlach Bundschu Winery review.
California’s oldest continuously family-owned winery, Gundlach Bundschu, has been operated by six generations since 1858. The estate has consistently balanced tradition with forward-thinking viticulture, from pioneering Rhinefarm in Sonoma Valley to embracing regenerative agriculture today. For more, see our full profile: Gundlach Bundschu Winery – Cork & Journey.
Crafted entirely from the Rhinefarm Estate, this Gewürztraminer draws on both Heritage Selection vines (planted in 1969) and Clone 47 (2008). The unusually wet and cool 2023 season delayed harvest into November, producing wines with freshness and vibrant aromatics.
Fermentation was conducted 90% in stainless steel to preserve purity and 10% in neutral oak to add subtle texture. Technical details:
Total Acidity: 6.9 g/L
Production was limited to ~5,079 cases (Winery Technical Notes).
This Gewürztraminer builds on the winery’s long heritage while highlighting a forward-looking milestone as its first ROC™-certified wine. Considered alongside the structure and power of the 2019 Gundlach Bundschu Vintage Reserve, which showcased the estate’s strength in Cabernet-driven reds, the 2023 Dry Gewürztraminer underscores Gundlach Bundschu’s ability to craft equally compelling whites. Together, these wines demonstrate both sides of the estate’s artistry—heritage and sustainability, depth and delicacy.
The 2023 Gundlach Bundschu Dry Gewürztraminer is both an expressive aromatic white and a landmark in the winery’s sustainability journey. With exotic fruit, floral aromatics, and a refined dry finish, it represents 165 years of history while pointing toward a regenerative future.
