Tucked into the lush, granitic slopes of Beaujolais near Lantignié, Le Domaine de la Roche feels like discovering a hidden treasure. Run by Mathieu and Charles—one a fifth-generation vigneron, the other a kindred spirit—the estate delivers organic wines that pulse with energy and regional identity. Their warm welcome and terroir-driven philosophy made it our top pick in Beaujolais.
Founded in December 2019 by Mathieu (continuing his family’s five-generation legacy) and Charles, who joined from Germany, the estate is a modern revival of tradition. Their mission: to breathe new life into ancestral vineyards through organic—and even biodynamic—agriculture, cultivating about 7.5 hectares in Lantignié plus parcels in Régnié (RollingWine, Rue des Vignerons).
The vineyards—some up to 100 years old—cling to granitic soils, and the team treats each plot with care and precision, reflecting an agroecological ethos that puts the land first. This sensitivity shines through in both vine health and wine clarity (RollingWine, Rue des Vignerons).
The wines here are lively, expressive, and unmistakably Beaujolais—a real standout for drinkability and terroir character. A highlight is their Régnié Cru Gamay, bright and mineral-driven with crunchy red berry aromas—one sip and you know why this place became our favorite (Gnarly Vines).
Tasting ExperienceThe tasting experience at the estate is grounded, authentic, and richly rewarding. They offer:
We opted for a more immersive tasting (~€15), complete with commentary, cellar access, and a small surprise (Rue des Vignerons).
Inside the family cellar or outdoors with views of the vines, the setting felt both intimate and rooted in place. The hosts’ warmth and depth of knowledge left a strong impression—another reason it topped our Beaujolais list.
Mathieu, a fifth-generation winemaker, brings ancestral knowledge; Charles, his partner-in-wine from Germany, adds a fresh perspective. Together, they are the face of modern Beaujolais—respecting tradition while injecting youthful energy and sustainable practices into every bottle (RollingWine).
Beaujolais—known for its ancient soils and Gamay grape—is reimagined here through an organic lens. The Domaine’s approach exemplifies the region’s revival: honoring history while crafting wines that speak to contemporary palates (Wikipedia – Beaujolais Geopark, RollingWine).
Le Domaine de la Roche is a heartfelt favorite—authentic, thoughtful, and alive with terroir. Their wines, rooted in organic farming and Beaujolais’s legacy, are a joy to taste. Whether sipping in the cellar or overlooking their vineyard, the experience stays with you. If you’re touring Beaujolais, this is a must-stop—and our top choice.
