Overview

Just minutes from Solvang, CA, Alisal Ranch is a 10,500-acre paradise where the Old West meets modern luxury. With its sprawling oak-studded landscapes, private lake, and working cattle ranch, the resort feels like a hidden world far from city life—yet it’s only about 35 miles from Santa Barbara.

Beyond its idyllic setting, Alisal Ranch is in the heart of wine country, making it a prime location for exploring Santa Ynez Valley’s vineyards. Nearby, the charming Danish town of Solvang offers plenty of boutique shopping, bakeries, and wine-tasting rooms. But truth be told, once you step onto Alisal’s grounds, you won’t want to leave.

A Sideways Celebration at Alisal Ranch

We visited Alisal Ranch for the 20th anniversary of Sideways, joining a fantastic group of fans—including none other than author Rex Pickett himself. Over the course of a few days, we reminisced about the novel and film, explored the very landscapes and Wineries (Fess Parker and Foxen Canyon) that inspired them, and, of course, enjoyed some seriously good wine.

If you want to dive deeper into the Sideways story, check out Rex Pickett’s reflections on writing the novel here and a fascinating interview and blind tasting of…Merlot with Rex on our YouTube Channel here. Alisal Ranch was the perfect setting for this celebration—rustic yet elegant, just like Sideways itself.

Property History

Alisal Ranch isn’t just a resort—it’s a piece of California history. Originally a working cattle ranch, it has been in operation since the 1840s and was transformed into a luxury guest ranch in 1946. Over the years, it has hosted celebrities, dignitaries, and countless guests looking for a taste of the cowboy lifestyle without sacrificing comfort.

Despite its evolution, Alisal Ranch has stayed true to its roots. You’ll still see cattle grazing, wranglers saddling up horses, and authentic Western-style touches throughout the property. But don’t be fooled—this isn’t your typical rugged dude ranch. The accommodations, dining, and activities are pure five-star indulgence.
