Nestled in the charming town of Aubrey, about an hour’s drive north of Dallas, Fortunata Winery offers wine enthusiasts a delightful escape into North Texas wine country. With a stunning outdoor wine-tasting area shaded by a leafy trellis and inviting bistro tables spread across the lawn, it’s a picturesque spot for savoring a wide variety of wines crafted from both estate-grown and Texas-sourced grapes.
From wood-fired pizzas that perfectly complement their wines to cozy overnight accommodations in villas and casitas, Fortunata Winery promises a memorable experience. Popular for hosting events and winery weddings, it’s an ideal destination for both a leisurely afternoon and a romantic stay. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a casual wine lover, Fortunata Winery offers a welcoming retreat amidst the Texas vineyards.
Fortunata Winery is located in Aubrey, Texas, about an hour north of Dallas. The winery, started by Shari and Dr. Kelby Trusty, crafts a variety of wines made with grapes from their estate vineyard, and grapes sourced from throughout Texas wine country.
If you enjoy sipping outdoors, you will love the garden-like patio set up. You can sip Fortunata wines in an area shaded by a leafy trellis or at a number of bistro tables on the lawn. A smaller indoor tasting room evokes rustic Texas. A large stone fireplace, comfortable leather chairs, and traditional polished wood tables create a comfortable place to explore the large portfolio of wines.
Pro Tip: Before you go, keep in mind that Fortunata Winery is only open Thursday through Sunday. The winery is only open from 5PM to 10PM on Thursday and Friday, Saturday from 1PM to 10PM and Sunday, 1PM to 6PM.
One of our biggest takeaways from our travels through Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona wine country is that these winemakers are still trying to figure out which varieties resonate with the locals and which grapes do best in the challenging growing conditions.
As such, most wineries work with a huge number of grapes and don’t necessarily specialize in one thing.
The current lineup at Fortunata Winery includes:
In addition to traditional still and sparkling wines, Fortunata also makes a few “wine-like” beverages that are spritzer-like. There’s Lime Bubbly, a white wine with added lime flavor, Peach Bubbly, a white wine with added peach flavors, and a still Peach wine with “natural peach flavor”.
Key Takeaway: We sampled several wines, and found that all of the wines we tasted were average at best. They fell somewhere in the 75 to 80 PTS range, which was typical of the Texas wines we sampled.
When we’ve gone wine tasting in Napa, or other more established wine regions for that matter, it’s been hit or miss with the food element. Wineries in Paso Robles are allowed to have restaurants on-site, while those in Napa and Sonoma are not.
Having said that, it was nice to see that Texas wineries can build out a food element for visitors, and they aren’t just limited to snacks. Two wood-burning brick pizza ovens churn out tasty pies to pair with your wine – there are 10+ options to choose from. Guests can also order wine-friendly foods like charcuterie boards.
Staying overnight at a winery is a bucket list item for so many wine lovers. If you happen to be in the Dallas area and you’ve dreamt of spending the night among the vineyards, you will be pleased to know that Fortunata Winery has six villas and three casitas on site to stay in.
Thinking of purchasing a wine? Stick with the Sauvignon Blanc. The wine is made more in the French style, rather than the grassy New Zealand style, and it was the best of the bunch.
Fortunata Winery is also a popular wedding venue. If you’ve been searching for the perfect winery wedding venue in North Texas, Fortunata could be a great fit.
If you’re in the mood for an afternoon wine tasting, go on Saturday or Sunday. These are the only days the winery is open for afternoon tastings.
The Fortunata Winery Wine Club generously allows members to select any five wines they wish for their wine club shipments. A great deal if you find a few wines you really like.
North Texas’ Fortunata Winery has scenic views, a nice outdoor seating area with friendly lunch service, and offers reasonably priced wine tastings. This is a nice winery to spend a few hours and have lunch, but if you’re a more experienced wine aficionado, we think you might be a bit underwhelmed.
