About Bingham Family Vineyards

The Bingham family has been deeply rooted in farming for over four generations, but the family’s entry into wine didn’t begin until 2004 when the family planted four acres of Viognier and a petite 1 acre plot of Gewürztraminer. Grape growing began as an experimental crop to supplement the family’s over 2,000 acres of cotton and peanuts, which can be water intensive and tricky to sustain in drought years.

Today, Bingham Family Vineyards farms over 200 acres of grapes and supplies over 20 Texas wineries with a diverse range of wine grapes. With this kind of grape access, the brand can craft wines that are made with 100% Texas grown grapes.

Just 10 years after those first vines were planted, the brand began winning awards in national and international wine competitions, helping put Texas wine on the map! Winemaker Sam Jennings was appointed the brand’s head winemaker in 2021.

An interesting fact about Bingham Family Vineyards: the logo on the bottle is a nod to Cliff Bingham’s background as a classically trained pianist.

Location & Atmosphere: What to Expect

Wine tasting in Grapevine, Texas doesn’t get much cozier than the Bingham Family Vineyards’ tasting room. The inside is small, but nicely decorated with lots of colorful flowers, and the intimate patio allows wine lovers to sip outdoors.

When wine tasting inside, guests have the option to sit at a casual wine counter or at freestanding tables.

Texas High Plains Appellation

Nestled in the vast expanse of the Texas Panhandle, the Texas High Plains appellation is emerging as an enticing new frontier for winemakers, and curious sippers. Spanning an impressive 8 million acres, this elevated region, with its altitudes soaring between 3,000 and 4,000 feet, offers conditions perfect for viticulture. The arid climate, well-draining sandy loam soils, and strikingly varied temperature swings between day and night infuse the grapes with intense flavors and an elegant balance of acidity.

Texas is known for cultivating an eclectic mix of varietals, from the robust Tempranillo to rich Viognier, Dolcetto, and classic Cabernet Sauvignon, and most varieties seem to do well here.

Fun fact: Over 80% of all Texas grapes are grown in the High Plains Appellation!

Now onto the wines:

The White Wines

2019 Roussanne, 87 PTS: A nice medium-bodied white with notes of lemon lime, and a streak of pleasant minerality thanks to stainless steel aging.

2021 Albariño, 85 PTS: Texas winemakers make a strong case for the Spanish grape thriving here. This bottle is a very nice representation of the grape and is aged in stainless steel.

2021 Marsanne, 89 PTS: A very light white wine with medium plus acidity from Bingham Family Vineyards Grapevine. Notes of melon, pear, and citrus create a lovely warm weather wine that’s perfect for corkage at your favorite summer restaurant.

2021 Reserve Trebbiano, 83 PTS: An interesting take on Trebbiano. Oaked with elements of smoke, caramel, citrus, and a creaminess to the palate. Just 2 barrels made.

2019 Reserve Viognier, 84 PTS: Almost a little too much oak for us, but it works with this wine. Similar to the Trebbiano, there’s a distinct smoky, creamy quality here. Not really like any Viognier we have ever had.

2019 Windmill Roussanne, Viognier, and Marsanne blend, 80 PTS: A very rich wine with lots of oakiness. Notes of honey add to the textured mouthfeel.

2022 High Plains Sunset Rosé, 83 PTS: A fruit-forward rose wine with notes of dark cherry, blueberry, and blackberry. The color, taste and palate are closer to Beaujolais Nouveau. An intriguing color on a rose wine. Very nice.

The Red Wines

2019 Turnrow, 80 PTS: Such a cool name for a wine. The Bingham Family Vineyards Turnrow is named for the place on the farm where you turn the tractor around, a “Turn Row”. This Mourvedre, Dolcetto, Carignan, and Tempranillo blend has notes of cherry, strawberry, and light smoke.

2019 Dolcetto, 82 PTS: A very approachable red wine that will appeal to many types of sippers. Medium-bodied wine, with notes of strawberry, red plum and light chocolate.

2019 Petit Verdot, 81 PTS: A bold and tannic oak-aged wine that would be great to pair with hearty food. Notes of leather and pomegranate lead the way.

2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, 78 PTS: Made with 100% Texas grapes from the Texas High Plains appellation. Notes of black currant, black cherry, fig and chili pepper.

2019 Dugout Blend of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, & Cabernet Franc, 83 PTS: Another cool bottle name story. This Texas wine is named for the shelter that the Bingham ancestors lived in during the early 1900s. A Bordeaux blend with a bold palate.

2019 Dirt Farmer, 82 PTS: We like this Tempranillo, Dolcetto, Mourvedre, Graciano, and Teroldego blend from Bingham Family Vineyards. Very cool to see all of these Italian, French, and Spanish grapes together.

2019 Cabernet Franc, 87 PTS: Easily our favorite red wine, the palate is fruit forward and spicy with notes of raspberry, chili peppers, and vanilla.
