Super Tuscan Blend
For those who love bold yet polished reds, the 2022 Il Bruciato from Tenuta Guado al Tasso delivers plenty to talk about. This Super Tuscan blend brings together the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon, the plushness of Merlot, the spice of Syrah, and a touch of depth from Cabernet Franc. It’s smooth and inviting but with just enough grip to keep things interesting. At $34, it’s also an excellent value for a wine from Bolgheri, one of Tuscany’s most celebrated regions. Whether you’re opening it tonight or letting it develop for a few more years, Il Bruciato has plenty to offer.
Tenuta Guado al Tasso sits in the heart of Bolgheri, an area known for producing some of Italy’s most sought-after red wines. Part of the Antinori family’s extensive portfolio, this estate has played a key role in elevating Bolgheri’s reputation on the global stage. With its coastal location, the vineyards benefit from cooling sea breezes that help maintain freshness in the wines, even in warmer vintages. The estate is particularly known for crafting blends that combine elegance with power, and Il Bruciato is a great example of that philosophy in action.
Renzo Cotarella is a name that carries serious weight in the Italian wine world. As the head winemaker and CEO of Marchesi Antinori, he oversees multiple estates across Italy, as well as international projects in Chile, Washington State, and California. Despite his high-level role, he’s very much a hands-on winemaker, believing that great wine starts in the vineyard. With over 40 years of experience, Cotarella has a deep understanding of Bolgheri’s potential, and Il Bruciato reflects his ability to craft wines that are both refined and accessible.
Il Bruciato is immediately inviting, starting with its deep ruby color and high viscosity, hinting at its richness. On the nose, there’s an intense mix of black cherry, black currant, graphite, and baking spices, with subtle notes of cedar, vanilla, and cigar box adding complexity.
On the palate, this wine doesn’t hold back. The dark fruit carries through, balanced by flavors of licorice, mint, and cigar box. The structure is firm, with high tannins that are well-integrated and softened by the ripe fruit. Medium-minus acidity keeps things fresh, preventing the wine from feeling overly heavy. The alcohol is noticeable at 14%, but it’s well-matched by the wine’s full body and pronounced flavor intensity. The finish is long, leaving behind traces of dark fruit, spice, and a touch of earthiness.
Decanting for 30 minutes to an hour helps soften the tannins and bring out the wine’s layered aromas. A Bordeaux-style glass allows it to open up fully, making it an even more enjoyable experience.
The 2022 Il Bruciato is a standout Super Tuscan at its price point, offering depth and character without needing years of aging to be enjoyable. It’s already drinking well but has enough structure to develop through 2030. The professional ratings back up its quality, with Jeb Dunnuck awarding it 93 points, praising its seamless texture and ripe tannins. Wine Enthusiast (92 points) highlights its earthy, warm profile, while Wine Spectator, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, and Decanter all score it 91 points, recognizing its balance of fruit, spice, and freshness. Vinous, at 90 points, calls it a “fine entry-level offering” from the estate.
With a Cork and Journey Panel Score of 90 and a strong Vivino rating of 4.2, it’s clear that both critics and everyday wine drinkers appreciate what Il Bruciato brings to the table. The 2022 vintage may not have the sheer intensity of some past years, but it delivers plenty of charm and structure. If you’re looking for a well-crafted Bolgheri red that delivers solid value, this one is worth considering.
