Every great wine tells a story, and My Favorite Neighbor begins with one of friendship and shared passion. Founded by winemaker Eric Jensen, the name is a nod to his bond with Stephan Asseo of L’Aventure Winery. Their connection in Paso Robles sparked a vision rooted in collaboration, quality, and respect for the land. Today, My Favorite Neighbor carries that legacy forward, partnering with neighboring vineyards and farmers who share Jensen’s unwavering commitment to sustainable practices and exceptional craftsmanship. Each bottle is more than wine—it’s a tribute to the community, hard work, and the land that makes it all possible.
My Favorite Neighbor was founded by Eric Jensen (who is also the winemaker), and inspired by his friendship with renowned winemaker Stephan Asseo of L’Aventure Winery. Their connection in Paso Robles fostered a shared commitment to crafting exceptional wines, was rooted in the collaboration and integrity of the local community. Today, the winery extends this philosophy by partnering with neighboring vineyards, working closely with growers who share Jensen’s dedication to sustainable practices and high-quality farming. This sense of community is reflected in every bottle, celebrating the collective effort of the region’s stewards.
The foundation of My Favorite Neighbor’s success lies in its vineyards located in the Westside Hills of Paso Robles. Here, the rich clay soils, reminiscent of Bordeaux and Napa Valley, nurture premium grapes that form the basis of the winery’s offerings. By combining traditional winemaking techniques with modern, science-driven approaches, My Favorite Neighbor produces wines that rival some of the world’s most prestigious Cabernets without resorting to shortcuts or compromises. Each wine reflects the values of the land and the people who bring it to life.
Affectionately referred to as “MFN Blanc.” It is aged for eight months in 50% new French oak, contributing to its complex flavor profile.
The interplay between fruit, acidity, and oak is a standout feature of this Chardonnay. Each component complements the other, making for a wine that is layered yet approachable. The use of 50% new French oak adds a luxurious touch without sacrificing the purity of the fruit. The long finish underscores its high quality, leaving impressions of honey, lemon, and a touch of minerality.
This wine is drinking beautifully now and will continue to evolve through 2028. It’s best enjoyed at a cool temperature, around 50–55°F, to preserve its vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity. Decanting is unnecessary, as the wine is already well-integrated, but serving it in a proper Chardonnay glass will enhance its aromas and flavors.
This wine has been well-received; our tasting panel scores this 95 points, and it gets a respectable 4.1 score on Vivino. Notably, this vintage received a 97-point rating from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Its combination of quality and value is reflected in its $50 price point and strong “Value Rating” of 5. For those seeking a top-tier Chardonnay that doesn’t veer into excessive opulence, this bottle offers a compelling option.
Appearance
The wine pours a pale gold hue, with clarity that reflects expert winemaking and careful filtration. The brightness in the glass hints at its freshness, while the high viscosity, evident in the slow tears on the glass, signals its richness and structure.
Aromas
On the nose, the wine is a bouquet of tropical and orchard fruits layered with nuanced floral and creamy elements. Medium-intensity aromas of banana, guava, and peach dominate, with honeysuckle lending a delicate floral lift. The oak influence introduces subtle butter and vanilla notes, which are beautifully integrated with the fruit, creating a harmonious aromatic profile.
Palate
The first sip reveals a full-bodied wine with pronounced flavor intensity. Tropical notes of banana and guava intertwine with classic Chardonnay expressions of apple and pear. A bright streak of lemon acidity balances the richness, while honey and vanilla provide depth and roundness. The oak aging imparts a creamy, buttery texture that coats the palate without overwhelming it. The wine’s medium-plus acidity ensures a vibrant, mouthwatering quality, while the alcohol, at 13.8%, is well integrated, contributing to a warm, lingering finish.
The 2021 My Favorite Neighbor Chardonnay exemplifies what is possible when meticulous craftsmanship meets an exceptional vineyard site. It’s a wine that balances richness with freshness, offering layers of flavor that evolve with every sip. Whether enjoyed now or in the next few years, it promises to be a memorable addition to any wine lover’s collection. Or just buy it and drink it, like we did.
