Join us as we explore the story of Masi, the mastery behind their signature style, and the delectable versatility of Campofiorin that sets this winery apart in the vast world of Italian wines.
The Masi Campofiorin is an Italian red wine from Veneto crafted with Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grape varieties. This wine has a dry, fruit-forward profile and a medium to full-bodied structure.
Wineries that have been at it for centuries fascinate us, so we could not wait to learn more about MASI Group when we discovered they have been making wine since 1772. At the heart of this story is the Boscaini family and their family winery, now in its seventh and eighth generation. It’s hard to believe that a single family has such deep wine knowledge and has conducted over 250 harvests!
Maintaining a family approach to the wine, sixth-generation family member Sandro Boscanini has been the brand’s winemaker for decades.
An interesting fact about MASI: the winery takes its name from the valley ‘Vaio dei Masi,’ which the Boscainis purchased to plant vineyards.
What makes MASI unique is the use of a time-honored skill—the mastery of the Appassimento technique, an ancestral art where grapes are meticulously dried before pressing. This method, with roots traceable to the Roman Empire, endows the wines with incredible depth, complexity, and richness. Amazingly, MASI uses this technique on all of their wines, even the sparkling wines.
MASI became an international name when their Amarone wines were embraced by wine lovers outside of Italy, and this success drove them to continue creating new wines utilizing Italy’s grape varieties.
Campofiorin was yet another innovation. In Masi’s portfolio of wines, the medium-bodied, fruit-forward Campofiorin wine falls right between Valpolicella and ultra-rich Amarone. The opulent palate of Amarone can be a lot for some sippers, which makes a wine like Campofiorin a more approachable option for those exploring the vast world of Italian wines.
Molinara – often used in traditional Valpolicella blends, brings a light and fresh quality, along with a distinctive floral aroma, to the wines. Masi skillfully incorporates Molinara to impart a touch of elegance and depth to their wines, further enhancing the overall structure and balance of their renowned creations.
The 2015 Masi Campofiorin boasts a deep ruby hue and aromas of leather, smoke, graphite, and sour cherry, hinting at its full-bodied nature. On the palate, it delivers pronounced flavors of leather, smoke, raspberry, and cherry, supported by high tannins and balanced by medium acidity. The long finish echoes the smoky, spicy notes, making it a perfect companion for pairing with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or aged cheeses.
If you’re looking for a food-friendly Italian red wine under $30, consider Masi’s Campofiorin. While this bottle didn’t necessarily ‘wow’ us, it’s a good bottle for casual sipping and one we think you might enjoy.
What foods to pair with Masi Campofiorin?
Masi Campofiorin is a bold, memorable wine that pairs well with hearty foods like grilled meats – steaks, lamb chops or shanks, and sausages. The robust flavors can stand up to cozy stews and rustic dishes like osso buco. Risottos and red-sauce pasta are also easy pairing ideas.
